We just got back from our amazing trip to Ecuador. We could not have had a better time. Nicholas was the best! From the beginning, he helped to carefully craft the itinerary to suit our needs. Ecuador was breathtaking - from the capital city of Quito, to the Andean highlands with its rich indigenous culture, to the quisato sundial located exactly on the equator, to horse back riding in Cotopaxi National Park, to beautiful hikes in the mountains, to the exotic natural beauty of the steamy Amazon. We covered a lot of ground for one week but thanks to our terrific guides, and seamless coordination, getting around was a stress free experience. And we stayed at some of the most distinctive and comfortable accommodations which definitely exceeded our expectations. Lunch prepared by us in a Yasuni community, under the leadership of the women of the tribe. Well, we have not tasted the local delicacy: large worms grilled on the barbecue … And a piranha fishing trip… Tasted the same evening! Return to Quito, and walks around, including the unmissable Equator line, raptor park, Otavalo market (50% local, 50% made in China…), lakes, cloud forest, cable car. Visit of a chocolate and coffee factory… and tasting of coffee roasted and ground by us! Plane for the Galapagos, first Santa Cruz: giant tortoises, Charles Darwin centre, blue-footed boobies, penguins, dolphins… and snorkeling. Two hours of speedboat (difficult journey, but the flights are rare, expensive, and unreliable) for Isabela Island, and walks among iguanas, birds and sea lions that do not even move when you pass by … yet another planet... And back to Quito… Accommodation: in cities, equivalent 3***, elsewhere, jungle and Galapagos, we knew that you shouldn't expect the usual comfort, but it was very correct. The food: since we didn't want to suffer the pangs of the turista, no tap water, no unpeeled fruits or vegetables, pasta, rice and pizzas were on the menu. Note: in the Galapagos, water bottled on site is OK for your health but tastes horrible, because it comes from desalination; therefore, buy bottled water on the mainland. And everything is very expensive on these remote islands. Mosquitoes: they are present, and we have exhausted 4 sprays 5/5... Longues balades, presque trekkings, dans la jungle humide et boueuse (bottes étanches fournies, ouf !) carrément … sur une autre planète. Animaux en quantité, et balade la nuit pour découvrir les espèces nocturnes. Lunch préparé par nous dans une communauté Yasuni, sous la houlettes des femmes de la tribu. Bon, on a pas goûté à la délicatesse locale : des gros vers grillés au barbecue … Et une partie de pêche aux piranhas … Dégustés le soir même ! Retour à Quito, et balades aux environs, y compris l'incontournable ligne de l'Equateur, parc aux rapaces, marché d'Otavalo (50% local, 50% made in China …), lacs, forêt de nuages, téléphérique. Visite d'une manufacture de chocolat et de café … et dégustation du café torréfié et moulu à la min par nous ! Avion pour les Galapagos, d'abord Santa Cruz : tortues géantes, centre Charles Darwin, fous à patte bleues, pingouins, dauphins … et snorkeling. Deux heures de vedette rapide (trajet éprouvant, mais les vols sont rares, chers, et non fiables) pour Isabela Island, et balades au milieu des iguanes, oiseaux et otaries qui ne bougent même pas lorsqu'on passe à côté … encore une autre planète … Et retour à Quito … Les hébergements : dans les villes, équivalent 3***, ailleurs, jungle et Galapagos, on le savait, il ne faut pas s'attendre au confort habituel, mais c'était très correct.
