Sierra Central - The Volcanoes Avenue
A majestic double range of snow topped volcanoes is marking this natural avenue, containing indigenous villages with colorful markets. The equatorial Andes are often compared to a back spine although there are people that say that it looks more like a pirogue. The Este and Oeste Cordilleras form its sides and the transversal ranges linking them, lower and called nudos, form their banks. Between each nudos and at an altitude of 2300 to 3000 m, there is a valley with fertile volcanic ground. These valleys are densely populated and extensively exploited and have already been occupied by different ethnical groups in the pre Inca era. The Panamerican road and the railway both trace between the cordilleras in the South-North direction, following the shape of the nudos, passing fields with astonished cows at the base of a range of active or inactive volcanoes, some topped with permanent snow. In 1802 the exploratory Alexander Von Humbolt called this way the “Volcanoes Avenue”. The geographical location of Ecuador made it possible to travel along this avenue in the palm trees and the orchids while seeing tundra style vegetation with glaciers and fields of snow higher above you. While leaving the valley to climb up the slopes you will be able to cross every kind of ecosystem, from the subtropical area to the altiplano area.

Sierra Norte
The great market of Otavalo opens the door to the Northern Sierra with beautiful lakes and the crafting villages that arrive till the Colombian’s border. This city has specilized itself with the creation of pieces of clothing made of wool, like sweaters, rugs and hammocks for example. The natives have not lost their traditions, men and women use their typical clothes and women are very popular because of the use of necklaces of a great variety of colors which can be bought in the market. The Imbabura province, located in the north of Quito is also part of the touristic reputation of Ecuador. It is to say that the volcanoes, the lakes and the valleys there are truly like postal cards, while the diversity of indigenous groups make the area very interesting for cultural knowledge. The area is also well known for its crafting: the wooden sculptures of San Antonio, the leathers of Cotacachi and the famous weaving of Otavalo.

Sierra Sur
Cuenca and its colonial treasures, the most important Inca ruins in Ingapirca, the Vilcabamba valley and the Podocarpus park : This area which used to be isolated puts now all the effort to seduce you. It was less touristic than the North for because of the difficulty people had to get there, but the South Sierra is now an unavoidable stop for the travelers going from Ecuador to Peru. The improvement of the road system and the development of infrastructures allow people to travel, this place include the the provinces of Canar, Azuay and Loja. In here the Andes get larger and flatter, their emerald color and their mountain roads will give you a impressive thrill.
